If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it’s easy to ignore - but it’s not something you should overlook. Bleeding gums are often one of the first signs that something isn’t quite right with your oral health.
What Causes Bleeding Gums?
The most common cause is plaque build-up along the gum line. This can lead to inflammation, known as gingivitis.
Other causes include:
Poor brushing or flossing habits
Smoking
Hormonal changes
Certain medical conditions
Is It Serious?
In the early stages, gum disease is reversible.
However, if left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which may lead to:
Gum recession
Loose teeth
Tooth loss
How Can You Stop It?
Simple steps can make a big difference:
Brush twice a day with proper technique - ask your dentist or hygienist for advice on brushing techniques
Clean between your teeth daily (floss or interdental brushes)
Visit your hygienist regularly
When Should You See a Dentist?
If your gums:
Bleed regularly
Feel sore or swollen
Look red or inflamed
…it’s time to get them checked.
